WOMEN IN THE HOLOCAUST
Professional Development Workshop: Tuesday, March 16, 2027 9am - 3pm | Middlebury, VT
This session is framed around understanding women’s different experiences and roles during the Holocaust. How did Jewish women experience life in Nazi Germany? How did Jewish women survive in the ghettos? How did Jewish women face unique challenges in the camps? How were German women involved in perpetrating the crimes of the Holocaust? How did Jewish women resist? What was life like for Jewish women after liberation? Studying gender enhances understanding of the Holocaust because the Holocaust produced experiences and dilemmas unique to Jewish women.

Educators will learn strategies to teach about the experiences of women during the Holocaust. Jewish women faced the dangers and difficult choices of genocide as women. Nazi ideology targeted women differently, especially for their capacity to reproduce and as mothers. Women also had different experiences of dehumanization, humiliation, and violence in the ghettos and camps. Yet, women also found ways to survive and resist, shaped by their experiences in genocide. Including women’s stories when teaching the Holocaust creates fuller, more nuanced, and accurate understanding.
The session will center around the pedagogical principles of Echoes & Reflections while simultaneously demonstrating classroom-ready resources appropriate for secondary classrooms nationwide. Educators will gain exposure through experiential activities with these classroom-ready resources while also creating connections with an experienced classroom educator/facilitator who will assist in fostering confidence and the ability to seek out answers in one’s quest to deepen their pedagogical and content-based practices.
